Before and Now

A photo taken off guard reveals most about a young girl. To make up for lack of prep time, the girl grins into the camera. Her mussed hair cascades down her backside. The bright dress she dons speaks volumes about her personality.

The living room she stands in exudes formalities. Not a place for games. Flash from the camera gives the only light. As the light bounces off the photo of a relative she could not meet but she whispers to every night, the girl’s face looks flushed. From a golden cheeks, to a scar-less chin, she looks extremely bright.

Underneath the dress lies an over-the-top soul yearning to burst forth. Yet she finds herself holding back because of wavering self esteem. So she comes off as soft-spoken, shy, and introverted. The only way she expresses herself is with clothing. She defines herself as a walking oxymoron; the quiet girl who wears loud colors.

Insecurity surrounds her like a cloud wherever she goes. From her ‘five head’, to her big eyes, to the two canines jutting out of her gums, she doesn’t like the way she looks. And the hand-sewn clothes help none.

But no matter how hard she tries, she lets it discourage her. Behind the huge grin and bangs, lurks a happy but discontent child. At seven years young, she allows the smallest thing take over her. This photo captures her most vulnerable: with her emotional wall down, and unsure.

To what degree can a person change and who has the right to determine the significance?
