Our lives are stories

You could always use the cliché example of closing one chapter in your life and starting another. Being able to reread the past but knowing the rest is still unwritten. And that’s a great example. But, that’s not the message I want to employ. Rather, the tacit principle that stories are as unique as the people who tell them.

Each of our stories differ because we’re all different. And this is a gift we should all hone. In writing our college essay, for example, we looked for the one aspect of our life that could make us stand out from our peers. Whether it’s where you came from, a person who influenced you, or an experience that changed you, without those memories of a place, person, or event, we would not be who we are.

With that said, even as we look to our future, we'll never forget our past. We follow the footsteps of our past leaders; however, it is not that we step on the footprints they imprinted into our history, but that we walk alongside their footprints. And at some point we would surpass them and make our own impact. Our footprints will diverge from theirs as we improve our community and our world. While some of us started with shaky steps, all of us will surely end walking in a straight path. And who knows, in the future some of our footprints may be the ones followed by others.

The lesson here is that there will be people who will be following your footprints. Make your footprints worth following; make your story worth reading. From the moment you read this, know that you have the power to change your future, and to make sure your steps lead your followers to a place where they can thrive as a scholar and as a person. From this day on, you have the power to make your future what you want it to be. If your story is a book, and you don’t like what you see, we have the ability and desire to rewrite it. Making it to today may have been the first obstacle in our lives; make sure it's not the last you overcome.
